Salt, Source, Testing, Proof — how we verify what is in every batch

Salt has better geology than it has marketing. This page puts the two side by side — provenance, testing, chemistry, and the gap between what a lab report actually says and what a label implies. No mountain silhouettes required.

Salt is salt. That doesn't make every salt identical.

Nearly every salt sold in the UK is the same molecule: sodium chloride. Table salt, sea salt, rock salt, pink salt — chemically, they're overwhelmingly NaCl. Where they actually differ is everything around that molecule: where it was dug up or evaporated, what trace constituents travelled with it, how it was processed, what colour it ended up, how coarse the grain is, whether it's been checked for contaminants, and whether anyone will show you the paperwork.

None of that is a ranking system. A salt being different from another salt does not make it healthier, safer or more special — it makes it different. If a brand wants you to believe otherwise, that's a marketing claim, not a chemistry lesson. This page is the chemistry lesson.

Why is Himalayan pink salt pink?

Not because it spent time absorbing a sunset, and not because it's unusually rich in anything. The colour comes from trace constituents inside the rock salt itself — primarily iron oxide, alongside smaller amounts of other trace elements that vary from batch to batch and mine to mine.

That's the whole explanation. Colour tells you something about the geology that formed the crystal millions of years before anyone bagged it. It does not tell you the salt is more nutritious, more pure, or better for you than a white crystal from a different source. A pink crystal and a white crystal can come from the same broad formation and differ only in which trace elements happened to travel with them. Treat the colour as a fact about geology, not a health claim.

Where our pink salt actually comes from

Here's the part most Himalayan salt packaging treats as decoration: an actual location.

Our pink salt comes from Kalabagh, Pakistan, within Pakistan's Punjab Salt Range — the same broader Salt Range that sits south of the main Himalayan mountain system and includes several well-known salt deposits, including the Khewra mines. Khewra gets most of the tourist attention. Kalabagh is where our salt is from. They are not the same place, and we're not going to let a more famous postcode do the talking for a different one.

"Himalayan pink salt" is the name the entire category trades under, ourselves included — it's on our own packaging too. But a category name is not a source. We think you're owed the next sentence: the country, the range and the specific deposit, not just an adjective borrowed from a mountain range the salt doesn't actually come from.

What does "lab-tested" actually mean?

"Lab-tested" gets printed on packaging like a single, fixed achievement. It isn't. It's a description of a process, and the process has boundaries worth knowing.

When we send a batch for testing, an independent, accredited laboratory checks it against a defined set of analytes — things like specified heavy metals, moisture content where relevant, and composition or purity markers appropriate to that product. The lab doesn't test for everything that could theoretically exist. It tests for what the method is built to detect, at whatever detection threshold that method has.

That's why one phrase does a lot of work on this page: not detected. It means the substance wasn't found at or above the level the test could measure. It is not the same claim as "does not exist," and we're not going to blur that line just to make a label sound more absolute than the science behind it.

The heavy-metal question

We're not here to tell you other salt brands are dangerous. We don't have the evidence for that claim, so we're not making it — and any brand implying it about a whole category without publishing its own data is doing exactly what we're arguing against.

What we will say is narrower, and we think more useful: you shouldn't have to take a brand's word for what's in their product. Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth at varying levels — in soil, seawater and rock formations everywhere, including wherever any given salt happens to be dug up or evaporated. That's geology, not scandal. The question that actually matters isn't whether a source could theoretically contain trace heavy metals. It's whether anyone checked, and whether you're allowed to see what they found.

Our Pink Himalayan Bath Salts are independently tested too, with published results for moisture and chloride content — that report doesn't include a mercury reading, and we're not going to borrow Epsom's result to cover the gap. Trace minerals: where marketing gets carried away

This is the section the wider pink salt industry would rather not write.

Himalayan pink salt does contain trace minerals — iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, among others — in amounts that vary between batches and mines. That sentence is true. It is also, on its own, doing almost no nutritional work, because "contains trace minerals" and "provides a nutritionally meaningful amount of those minerals" are two entirely different claims. Salt marketing spends a lot of energy pretending they're the same one.

Independent analysis of pink salts has found real variation in mineral composition between samples — and concluded that at the salt intakes people actually consume, those trace minerals contribute amounts too small to matter nutritionally. A pinch of pink salt does not need to do the job of your dinner. If you want magnesium, potassium or iron, there are foods built for exactly that job, and a seasoning isn't one of them.

We sell salt because food needs seasoning properly done. We don't sell it as a substitute for eating vegetables, and we're not going to write copy implying otherwise just because "trace minerals" sounds better on a label than "salt."

What about sea salt?

Sea salt starts from a different process entirely: seawater is evaporated — in open ponds under sun and wind, or through more controlled evaporation — until what's left is, again, predominantly sodium chloride, plus whatever trace minerals and crystal structure that particular evaporation process leaves behind.

Our Natural Sea Salt is fine grain, made for everyday cooking, and independently tested for quality and heavy metals the same way our other products are. It isn't marketed here as more "natural" than rock salt — evaporating seawater and mining rock salt are both, self-evidently, natural processes. The differences that actually matter are grain, flavour and what the testing shows, not which origin story sounds more coastal.

Epsom salt isn't table salt

Same four-letter word. Different chemistry.

Table salt — including everything above on this page — is sodium chloride, NaCl. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, usually sold as the hydrated crystal MgSO₄·7H₂O. They share a name because of history, not chemistry: Epsom salt takes its name from a mineral spring in Epsom, England, where it was found centuries ago. What's sold today, ours included, is manufactured magnesium sulfate, not anything drawn from that spring.

Our Epsom Bath Salts are a bath and cosmetic product, not a food. They are not edible salt, and we don't sell them as one. Ours contains 98.616% magnesium sulfate, independently tested by TTI Testing Laboratories, with mercury not detected. That's a composition and purity result — it is not a medical claim, and we're not going to tell you it detoxes anything, fixes your muscles or improves your sleep. If you're using it for a specific health reason, that's a conversation for a doctor or pharmacist, not a product description.

Fine grain vs coarse grain

Grain size is a practical decision, not a chemistry decision.

Fine grain — our edible Pink Himalayan Salt and Natural Sea Salt, both in 450g and 900g — dissolves quickly and distributes evenly, which is what you want at the stove, at the table or folded into a marinade.

Coarse crystals — our Pink Himalayan Bath Salts — dissolve more slowly, which is exactly the point for a bath product: you want the crystals dispersing gradually in the water, not vanishing the second they touch it.

Neither grain is "purer" or "more potent" than the other. It's the same sodium chloride, cut to a different size for a different job. Don't let a photo of coarse pink crystals in a jar convince you it's a better product than the fine grain next to it — it's a different tool, not a better one.

What testing can prove — and what it can't

Testing can help establish:

  • measured composition against the analytes a lab actually checked
  • specified contaminants, including certain heavy metals, at the lab's detection threshold
  • moisture content, where relevant to that product
  • whether a substance was detected under the method used — not whether it is absolutely, provably absent
  • documentation tied to one particular sample and report, not a promise about every future batch

Testing does not prove:

  • miracle health benefits
  • detoxification of anything
  • that a salt is nutritionally superior because it happens to be pink
  • that one report describes every salt, everywhere, forever
  • vague lifestyle claims a marketing team would like to attach to a mineral

We will tell you where it comes from.
We will show you what was tested.
We will publish the paperwork.
We will distinguish "not detected" from "does not exist."
We will tell you the grain.
We will tell you what kind of salt you are buying.

What we won't claim

We won't tell you salt detoxes your body.
We won't turn trace minerals into a multivitamin story.
We won't use "Himalayan" as a substitute for actual provenance.
We won't call something proven when we cannot show the evidence.
We won't turn seasoning into medicine.

The packaging can have attitude. The evidence doesn't get that luxury.

Questions worth asking about salt

Is Himalayan pink salt healthier than regular salt?

No more than a colour is a health claim. Chemically, it's still overwhelmingly sodium chloride, and the NHS recommends adults keep total salt intake — from any source — to no more than 6g a day. Pink salt is a legitimate, well-documented product with a specific origin and testing behind it. It is not a healthier alternative to salt in general, and we're not going to tell you otherwise to sell more of it.

Does Himalayan pink salt contain minerals?

Yes, in trace amounts — iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium among others, varying between batches. That's a fact about geology, not a nutrition plan. At normal dietary salt intakes, those trace amounts are too small to provide a meaningful nutritional contribution. See Trace minerals: where marketing gets carried away above.

Why is Himalayan salt pink?

Where does Himalayan pink salt come from?

As a category, from Pakistan's Punjab Salt Range, a geological formation south of the main Himalayan mountain system. Our own Pink Himalayan Salt is sourced specifically from Kalabagh, Pakistan, within that range.

Is The Rites of Salt Himalayan pink salt lab-tested?

Yes. It's independently tested by accredited laboratories, and we publish each report on our Lab Reports page as it clears, rather than asking you to take "lab-tested" on trust.

Does your Himalayan salt contain heavy metals?

We're not going to give you an absolute yes or no, because that's not what a lab report says. Our testing programme checks for a defined set of heavy metals, including mercury — but the report for our edible Himalayan pink salt is still clearing and hasn't published yet, so there's no result to state here. When it clears, it will appear on the Lab Reports page.

What is Epsom salt?

Magnesium sulfate, typically sold as the hydrated crystal MgSO₄·7H₂O. It isn't table salt, isn't sodium chloride, and our version is a bath product, not a food. See Epsom salt isn't table salt above.

What is the difference between fine and coarse salt?
